‘Behave and maybe have a whiskey!' - Yate care home centenarian reveals secret to long life

Yate

Venue: Ladden View Care Home

A resident at a Yate care home toasted her 100th birthday and shared her secret to a long and happy life.

Ruby Harris, a resident at Care UK’s Ladden View, on Fletcher Road, marked her newfound centenarian status not once, but twice.

The celebrations started with a small affair at the home, where Ruby toasted the milestone with her fellow residents.

For her second, big birthday bash, she was later joined by more than 20 members of her family as part of a private event held at the home. To make the day extra special, the home was decked out with balloons and bunting, and everyone was treated to a host of delicious cakes by the home’s talented Head Chef.

When asked for her secret to a long life, Ruby said: “Behave, eat your food and maybe have a whiskey!”

Affectionately nicknamed ‘Queen Ruby’ at Ladden View, she was the home’s first ever resident when the home opened in November 2024. Back then, she became known in the community for waving at everyone who walked past her window and soon, the local children began standing on the low walls outside the home to wave back at her as they walked home from school.

Ruby was born in Bath on 13th September 1926 and is well known in Bristol for being the former owner of ‘Rogers and Harris’ greengrocers in her younger years. She married her husband Howard in 1944 in Horfield and went on to have four children – Dennis, Ann, Martyn and Jane – who have given her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Vicky Williams, Deputy Home Manager at Ladden View, said: “It was truly wonderful to see our Queen Ruby surrounded by her loving family and friends, celebrating such an incredible milestone in her life.

“Ruby was the first resident to move into the home, so toasting such a special milestone with her feels like a full circle moment for us. It was an absolute honour to help make the day extra special for her and her loved ones.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us to mark the occasion – we’re very lucky to have Ruby as part of not only our Ladden View family, but our much larger Yate family too.”
