Charity Christmas lights shine bright for Sue Ryder

A family from South Cerney near Cirencester have once again transformed their home into a festive light extravaganza in aid of Sue Ryder, which runs Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham.

Every December for more than a decade, the Wearing family have decked their house with a dazzling array of Christmas lights in memory of much‑loved wife, mother and grandmother, Sandra Wearing, who was cared for at Leckhampton Court Hospice. This popular annual event has already raised over £8,350 for Sue Ryder, with all donations from people visiting the display going directly to support the charity’s palliative and bereavement services.

The display, on Beverstone Road in South Cerney, is now open for locals to enjoy between 4.30pm – 8.30pm daily until New Year’s Day.

The event is a true family affair, with Kelvin Wearing working alongside his daughter Debbie and relatives to create the festive spectacle. Debbie explained: “Four new inflatables have been added this year – three of them animated – including a giant present with a snowman popping out of the top, and even a helicopter suspended in the garden! It’s a real labour of love, and the family take over a month to create the display.”

Their impressive dedication to the Christmas spectacle is inspired by the care Sandra received at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice at the end of her life. Debbie shared: “The hospice was absolutely great and the care my mum received was second to none. I have the utmost respect for all the staff who supported our family at such a difficult time.”

The display has become a much‑anticipated community event, bringing people together to enjoy the twinkling festive scenes and glittering visual treats.

Alysia Cameron‑Price, Community Fundraising Manager for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, said: “I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Kelvin, Debbie and the rest of the family for their continued support. Not only have their wonderful illuminations brought joy to the local community for over a decade, the money they raise means that we can continue to provide care to people when they need it most.”
The display is open to visitors daily between 4.30pm – 8.30pm and runs until 1 January 2026. All donations to the hospice will be gratefully received.
