Creating a buzz – Cheltenham man raises thousands for charity

Tony Winstone (47) has raised nearly £50,000 for palliative care and bereavement support charity Sue Ryder with his popular fundraising events. His mum, Margaret, was cared for at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham at the end of her life.

He explained what inspired him to start his fundraising journey for Sue Ryder: “I was so impressed and humbled by the care that was given to my mum when she was in the hospice. After she died in 2019, I wanted to find a way to say thank you for the amazing way she was looked after.”

Tony organised his first event, a Sunday afternoon extravaganza that saw families enjoying music from local bands, at the Beehive Montepellier that year and quickly smashed his initial target of £1,000. Since then, the event has gone from strength to strength, returning for the fifth year this summer, to the delight of the local community.

Keen to keep the momentum going throughout the year, Tony held his most recent fun-filled-fundraiser on 6 November, a supper and Quiz Night, once again held at the Beehive Montpellier. The evening featured a host of superb prizes, including six tickets to an England International rugby match. Tony shared: “The quiz went really well; people really enjoyed it. The evening was hosted by presenter and broadcaster Laura Winter, and the room was absolutely buzzing!”

Several local businesses have supported Tony over the years to put on these events, he shared: “I’d like to say a massive thank you to Venatour, County to County, AP facilities and QCR recycling equipment, and also to the Beehive Montpellier who have always been such generous hosts.”

Tony is keen to encourage others to start fundraising for Sue Ryder, he said: “Don’t be afraid to get stuck in, people can be so generous and helpful! So many people in the area have been touched by the work of Sue Ryder and are keen to support their important work.”

Tony is determined to raise as much money as possible to honour his mum’s memory. Reflecting on what she would make of his fundraising efforts Tony shared: “I’d imagine she’d be really proud.”
