Football fundraiser in memory of much-loved Gloucester man to raise money for Sue Ryder

The friends of a Gloucester man who died earlier this year are hosting a charity football match in his honour, raising money for Sue Ryder, the charity that cared for him in his final weeks.

The Jordan Watts Memorial Match will take place at Gloucester City Football Club on Saturday 25 July, bringing together Jordan’s friends and family alongside players from Abbeymead Rovers, where Jordan’s brother Josh plays, for a 90-minute charity football match.

Passionate football fan, Jordan had lived with bone cancer since 2023. He was just 30 when he died in June 2026, in the care of Sue Ryder Nurses at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice near Cheltenham.

Jordan’s brother Josh Watts, also from Gloucester, said: “Jordan spent the last few months of his life at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice and received amazing care from everyone there, making sure that every single day he was kept as comfortable as possible. The people of Sue Ryder were so supportive to us as a family too, especially my mum and Jordan’s partner, who were there pretty much every day.”

“Growing up, Jordan loved football, especially Chelsea FC. He was a really talented player and played for Gloucester City during his teenage years. We thought, what better way to raise money for a great charity than by doing something he loved?”

Jordan’s friends Gareth Davies and Ben Major have been instrumental in organising the match.

Josh added: “It would mean a lot to us if people could get behind the event - not only to support an amazing charity, but also because we know what it would mean to Jordan to know we are doing something special like this in his name.”

“My family are so grateful to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice for the care they provided Jordan. He couldn’t have been in a better place in the last few months of his life. I’d also like to thank Gareth, Ben and our friends, who have done so much to organise the match day. It really means a lot.”

As well as action on the pitch, Spectators can expect an afternoon of community spirit and a raffle to help raise even more for Sue Ryder.
Gates open at 1.30pm on Saturday 25 July. Kickoff is at 3pm. Tickets do not need to be purchased in advance; supporters can simply turn up and pay on entry (£5 for adults and £2 for children), with all money raised going to Sue Ryder’s palliative, end-of-life care and bereavement support.
