Sue Ryder Consultant takes on tenth Cheltenham half to support local families

Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice Consultant, Paul Perkins, is preparing to lace up his trainers for his 10th half marathon at this year’s Run Cheltenham, raising money for the families he supports.
Paul, a Consultant in Palliative Medicine working with patients and the people important to them at the Cheltenham Sue Ryder Hospice for more than two decades, will take part in the event on 20 September.
He says that he continues to fundraise because he sees first-hand the impact the charity has on the community.
“Hospice care offers a unique sense of humanity, with our patients often telling us that they feel safe and cared for.
“It’s important that we all do what we can to raise money and help keep our vital services running,” Paul shares.
“I’m so passionate about the work that we do at Sue Ryder, supporting patients and families through some of the most difficult times of their lives.
“I am particularly proud of the team I work with at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice and the amazing support they offer.”
Sue Ryder provides expert palliative and end-of-life care through its hospices, including Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice - Gloucestershire’s only inpatient unit for specialist palliative care - and in people’s homes, alongside grief support, offering hope, dignity and kindness when it matters most.
Sue Ryder is the headline charity partner for Run Cheltenham - the Cheltenham Half Marathon, 10K and Move More Mile - which takes place on Sunday 20 September 2026, starting at Cheltenham Racecourse, Prestbury Park.
“I enjoy running,” Paul added. “It’s a way to keep fit and help me to continue working, supporting families, for as long as possible. I do a two-hour run most weeks.
“It’s great being part of the Run Cheltenham event and running around the streets of Cheltenham. There’s so much love for Sue Ryder and people recognise the shirt and give you a shout.”
Paul continues: “It’s a friendly and supportive event with a great atmosphere and strong sense of community and our fundraising team and volunteers offer so much support to runners throughout the course.”
Paul has committed to raising £2,000 through running this year’s Cheltenham Half Marathon, and he says every fundraising effort no matter how big or small makes a difference.
“We couldn't continue to care for people without fundraising and selling things in our charity shops. Living and working in the area, I see first-hand the difference we have on the local community - all donations matter and help to support patients and their families.”
