REVIEW: Friends! The Musical Parody at the Everyman Theatre

Cheltenham

Last night I left my smelly cat at home and took my lobster to see the New York and Las Vegas hit - Friends! The Musical Parody at the Everyman Cheltenham! (Warning, this review may contain poorly placed Friends puns!)

The concept is a simple one, using the live studio audience staging that we know and love from friends, the set is simple and ever changing, using moving parts and a simple studio backdrop to highlight that this is indeed a TV show recording. TVs, cameras and lighting add that special touch and make you feel like you're part of the show, perhaps even appearing on screen at some point!

The cast burst onto stage with a bang of a musical number and from this point on the show moves fast, after all, they have 10 seasons of storylines and comedy genius to cover. And they did a brilliant job, including all our favourite moments as well as gently poking fun at some of the more unrealistic elements.

Going into the show, I wondered if the jokes would land the way they did on TV and if the cast could recreate that same 90s comedy magic. I needn't have worried, the cast and crew have made their own kind of magic, and it's a wonderful tribute to the show we all know and love, but with much more laughter thrown in.

I have to give a special nod to the main cast - Chandler, Joey, Ross, Rachel, Monica and Phoebe. Their portrayals of their characters were spectacular. It was clear that they'd worked incredibly hard to get even the smallest mannerisms perfect, and it was astounding at times how much they really looked and sounded like their famous characters.

And what about the other characters you know and love? Well, there's no need to pivot, all your favourites make an appearance in the very best ways.

So if you're ready to laugh more than Janice and leave with a face that hurts from smiling and a healthy dose of 90s nostalgia, I urge you to go see the show. It's a musical comedy spectacular that you won't forget!

Friends! The Musical Parody is playing until Saturday 11th October 2025, so perk yourself up with some tickets today!
