REVIEW: Murder by Misadventure at the Everyman Theatre

Cheltenham

Two veteran mystery writers put their wits and experience to the test in Murder by Misadventure, written by Edward Taylor, known for the BBC Radio comedy series The Men from the Ministry. Each of the two writers face their own demons: badly in debt, Paul will go to any lengths to secure a paycheck, while Harry tries desperately to keep his skeletons firmly in the closet. Harry’s wife Emma seeks to maintain her rich, idyllic life, but the status quo is shaken as a real-life mystery unfolds.

The play is sectioned into four main scenes, with a curtain call between each one, creating a few mini-intervals which gave us the chance to speculate on what might happen. Each scene features twists and turns, as expected of a murder mystery, bringing new character dynamics to light. Some twists made our entire audience jump in surprise!

Without spoiling too much, this whodunnit is sure to keep you on your toes and wondering what might come next. Though Harry and Paul’s interactions weigh heavy under their shared history, their different approaches to conflict drive this narrative – however, we may just find out that these two writers are far more similar than we suspect.

The stand-out character is Inspector Egan, who drops in after the interval wearing a Columbo-like coat and sniffing around like a bloodhound. Pointing out the holes in the characters’ plans, and humorously popping back in to ask “just one more thing…”, Egan brings a refreshing and welcome light-hearted tone to the play.

Please note that this performance features very loud noises and smoke effects.

With twists and turns until the very end, this play would suit you very well if you’re a murder mystery buff looking for an excellent time out at the theatre. Murder by Misadventure is playing at the Everyman Theatre until Saturday 2 August 2025, so book your tickets now!
