REVIEW: Murder on the Orient Express at the Everyman Theatre
Cheltenham
Agatha Christie’s enduring novel, Murder on the Orient Express, written in 1934, has been adapted many times for the screen, including the 1974 film with Albert Finney, the 2010 TV special with David Suchet, and the 2017 film with Kenneth Branagh, all starring as the quirky Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. Adapted for the stage by Ken Ludwig, this new production has just arrived at our ‘platform’ here in Cheltenham at the Everyman Theatre.
Michael Maloney turns in an engaging and forthright performance as Poirot, putting all of Poirot’s best traits on display: obsessing over the little details that make up the case, embracing the challenge with eccentric enthusiasm, and driving forward until the solution is found. Teaming up with his ‘mon ami’ Monsieur Bouc, played with genuine delight by Bob Barrett, Poirot must use his ‘little grey cells’ to uncover the mysteries hidden in the carriages of the grand Orient Express.
The staging is one of the most inventive we’ve seen at the Everyman, the whole stage transforming seamlessly into a large variety of train set pieces. Projectors and creative lighting immerse the audience into the setting, but it’s the characters that engage us the most. Mrs Hubbard was our audience’s favourite, we loved her comedy and banter with the other characters – but we won’t spoil who!
Overall this production puts a fresh spin on Agatha Christie’s murder mystery and promises to be a fun, thrilling time at the theatre, certainly not one to be missed. Please note that this performance contains smoke machines and loud sound effects.
Murder on the Orient Express stops by the Everyman Theatre until 3rd May, so grab your ticket and prepare to find out whodunnit!
