The ESO's Cheltenham season, 'Monumental Symphonies', concludes with Bruckner’s Symphony no. 4 which has long been an audience favourite with its pitch perfect balance of long-breathed melodies and orchestral drama more than meriting its nickname 'The Romantic'. Throughout the Fourth, it is that most evocative and romantic of instruments, the horn, which serves as protagonist and narrator, and so it is with the other two works on the programme.

Britain’s exciting young superstar of the horn, Ben Goldscheider, joins the ESO for Strauss’s Everest of horn concertos, and the programme opens with the magical horn quartet which sets the scene for Humperdink’s operatic fairy tale, 'Hansel and Gretel'.
