Ever since its unforgettable use in Brief Encounter, Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto has been one of classical music’s most beloved pieces, and has never been lower than third in Classic FM’s annual countdown. This glorious, romantic work is full of memorable melodies from start to finish, beginning with the piano’s imitation of tolling bells, through the heartbreaking slow movement, and the thrilling finale. If there is a better piece of classical music to try for the first time, we’re yet to find it.

Award-winning pianist Simon Callaghan (often to be heard on Radio 3 and Classic FM) is tonight’s soloist, joining Bristol Classical Players for this special programme of Russian romance. After a sparkling overture by Glinka, the programme concludes with Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony, depicting an epic battle with fate. Like the Rachmaninov, this great work has hugely loved melodies in every movement, notably the ‘Fate’ theme (first heard whispered on clarinets), the gentle, nostalgic horn solo in the slow movement and the life-enhancing glee of the triumphant finale.

Whether it’s your first concert or your 501st, this programme is guaranteed to thrill from start to finish. Don’t miss it!
