Boil a Mouse in Urine – Childcare in Tudor and Stuart times

Old Chapel Court, Church Street, Tewkesbury

Dates: 08/08/2026

Venue: Old Baptist Chapel

This talk will reveal the ways in which people cared for their young children in the 16th and 17th centuries, many of which were very different from modern practice. At the same time, people are basically the same, and the needs of children remain constant.
The title is the first part of an old remedy for a childcare problem. As this suggests, our forebears did not always do things as we do!
This lavishly illustrated talk takes the audience back in time some four centuries or more. I explore some of the ways in which children were brought into the world and their early years care in the period of the Tudors and Stuarts. It is a talk that has proven to be popular and enjoyable, and never fails to provoke discussion and laughter – and some shock and horror.

Date and Time:
Saturday 8th August
