Cider Making in Gloucestershire – from Foxwhelps to Firkins!

Old Chapel Court, Church Street, Tewkesbury

Dates: 07/03/2026

Venue: Old Baptist Chapel

Cider and its production is woven into Gloucestershire’s rich history, shaping the landscape around us and influencing customs and traditions such as wassailing. From its use as a means of payment for agricultural labourers, to the cider riots of the 1760s, to the recent growth of small, artisan producers, it continues to play an important role in the life of the county. This is a celebration of the drink that Laurie Lee famously once described as ‘wine of wild orchards and of russet summers.’

Speaker:
Andy Meller

When not researching the past, Andy has worked as a head teacher, actor and storyteller and has just retired as a bookseller with Waterstones. He has always had a passion for history and hopes his talks will inspire others to delve deeper into the subjects about which he speaks.
