VAN EYCK WAS HERE illustrated talk by popular art history lecturer Eleanor Bird
Chepstow
Dates: 09/06/2026
Venue: The Drill Hall Chepstow, Lower Church Street, NP16 5HJ
Exploring the exceptional and influential art of the early 15th century created by Jan van Eyck, in advance of the “once in a lifetime” exhibition of Van Eyck:The Portraits in London this autumn.
Van Eyck was known throughout the courts of Europe and led the way among Flemish painters of the Northern Renaissance. He famously recorded himself as the painter of the Arnolfini Portrait by inscribing on it: ‘Johannes de Eyck fuit hic’ – van Eyck was here – and his art brings an extraordinary sense of being in the room with his portrait sitters and religious subjects. Enjoy the exquisite detail and dazzling colour of van Eyck’s realism in this one-off illustrated talk.
The landmark exhibition Van Eyck: The Portraits at the National Gallery London will be the first time in history when all of his portraits will be brought together - this is a “one and only time” to see this!
Starts 7.30pm, 2 hours including short break
Tickets £12 online in advance (reserved seats) or at the door from 6.45pm. Bar
For those unable to get to Chepstow there will also be a live online lecture on Wed 10 June with recording available after, book online only
