English Symphony Orchestra announces new season - 'Monumental Symphonies' - at Cheltenham Town Hall

The English Symphony Orchestra (ESO) and their Principal Conductor Kenneth Woods return to one of the UK’s leading cultural venues - Cheltenham Town Hall - with a dynamic new concert series, presented in partnership with The Cheltenham Trust, Music at Cheltenham and supported by Arts Council England.
‘Monumental Symphonies’, will feature four masterpieces of the symphonic genre, by Sibelius, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky and Bruckner, presented alongside some of the best-loved classical and romantic works. Tickets for all four concerts are on sale now with multi-ticket discounts available.

The season opens on Thursday 1 October 2026 with a programme featuring one of Sibelius’s most popular works; his Symphony no. 2 which ends in a blaze of triumphant fanfares, alongside works by Mendelssohn, Smetana and Ethel Smyth. ESO Principal cellist Joely Koos takes the spotlight for a performance of Dvořák’s pastoral evocation of the Bohemian forests; 'Silent Woods'. More HERE.
Further concerts will showcase one of the definitive symphonies of the 20th Century; the Symphony no.5 by Shostakovich, on 19 November 2026, More HERE, and Bruckner’s idyllic portrayal of Austrian landscape and folklore depicted in his Symphony no.4, ‘Romantic’, on 22 April 2027. More HERE.

Throughout the season the ESO will feature exceptional soloists including acclaimed British horn virtuoso Ben Goldscheider and award-winning Canadian pianist Ryan Wang. To this celebrated roster Guest Conductor Jac van Steen provides the upbeat for a matinee performance of Tchaikovsky’s great fatalistic but ultimately triumphant Symphony no.4. In this concert on Sunday 14 February 2027, the soloist in Korngold’s meltingly beautiful Violin Concerto will be the ESO’s distinguished leader, Zoë Beyers. More HERE.
A new addition and free to ticket holders, the ESO Insight Series offers patrons the opportunity to enjoy a pre-concert conversation that provides valuable insight into the works they will hear.
