The Rake's Progress

English Touring Opera bring a season full of the temptations of the big city to Cheltenham this spring with new productions of two landmark operas.

Polly Graham directs ETO’s new production of Igor Stravinsky’s brilliantly inventive opera, a masterful blend of farce and tragedy, and a powerful depiction of a young man’s fall.

Igor Stravinsky's brilliantly inventive The Rake's Progress charts young Tom Rakewell's journey from unexpected riches to ruin at the hands of his own naivety and a devilish new friend.

One of Stravinsky's crowning achievements in his pioneering career, the opera is a cynical, but ultimately humanistic depiction of how the devil finds work for idle hands.

The production is helmed by Polly Graham, Artistic Director of Longborough Festival Opera, and the highly regarded conductor and composer Jack Sheen.
